Doing the Right Thing
A stray cat wandering
I picked it up
it seemed to weigh ounces
It nuzzled against my neck and purred
It has been in my largish bedroom for five days
getting fatter
playing with the wand toy
sleeping next to me
Am I doing the right thing?
a good soul adopts a runty cat
assures the Humane Society yes, it will be indoors
but believes cats deserve to roam free in nature
gives kitty free reign
outdoors
among snakes and coyotes
is that person doing the right thing?
Every day
people pass by suffering animals
and keep on walking
are they doing the right thing?
my 13 year old cat
who I've had since she was 10 weeks old
hates being shut out of the bedroom
she hisses under the door
scaring the tiny creature
obviously she's not doing the right thing
but then she's a cat
i can't keep this precious little being
who is so grateful for every dish of food
the longer I have her
the harder it will be to surrender her
and to whom?
all the shelters I've called are full
I didn't think of that
when I took her home
putting her back out on the street
is definitely the wrong thing
if the only place that will take her
is a shelter that kills its excess inventory
is death better
than scorching heat, starvation, and a life by a major interstate?
I want to do the right thing
but what exactly is that?
