death of a songbird.
I dwell upon the bluebird,
and the need to set it free
can you hear the quiet serenade?
chirping it's whiskey melody
O' shhh you caroling songster
deeply buried surrounded by silence
hidden from the dayward light
lest her ne'er-do-wells seed violence
I strain to hear the bluebird
unknown in love only cheap salvation
devotional thrive by five and dime
the kind you buy with zero expectation
Satisfying nicotine's craving swirls
stubbing out an off the cuff swear
that white flag of surrender flutters
giving strength chance to circle a square
I strain to hear the bluebird
amongst tales of faith and sin
dried up tear-streaks glisten
pressure-baking it all right in
Ugliness begets real fear
delicate hope unceremoniously clings,
so begins a new frontier
as I strain to hear the bluebird sing
The cage has always been
now empty and so starkly bare
hollowed out, strewn those tiny bones,
faded feathers are a wishful prayer
I strain to hear the bluebird
between the tick of every tock
incessant are counting hours
fast flying by beating clock
Faint, is the music of rhyme
impending death seems to be the only song
last breaths are keeping time
a secret pact honored in agreed lifelong
Tenderly dawning is bittersweet silence
the bluebird voices it's last soulful ring
tears flow into peace, my dear songbird
rest now— no more songs are left to sing.

The title lured me right in. For me the song of birds cuts through my dimmer thoughts. I like the Bukowski poem. His bluejay supposedly symbolized happiness and I got that from your poem, the connection with bluejay's song in the midst of a tough world. I'm not sure I'm taking away you're meaning but I love your writing. I just read it over and over, lol 💜 it's a day maker when you write a poem.

It's always such a wonderfully positive experience, reading your thoughtful feedback. It fills me with a sense of accomplishment that really uplifts - 💙
I like to believe that there is this warmer inner beauty within us that often struggles to see the light of day, for one reason or the other. This was my attempt to sort of incorporate that hidden self while coming to terms with the fact that we're all human and essentially flawed. That it's ok to be who we are and that loving yourself despite imperfections is aok. Bidding farewell to the past, welcoming change.. and what's to come.
Something like that, anyway.... hahaha...

Thanks for the reminder that there's always the possibility of improvement/change... If we're so willing.
Charles Bukowski was a sort of cult classic American "underground" poet, who if you were at all angsty in your youth (even now, really) chances are you probably gravitated towards reading him at some point... lol... He definitely had a raw, womanizing, chain smoking, whiskey drinking vibe... ;)
I love having you visit, J and deeply appreciate your insights.
Hope you are doing well

I skipped angsty in my youth and went straight into the Navy (not a far leap for a military brat). And thanks to my Navy training I learned raw, womanizing, chain smoking, whiskey drinking ways without the help of books. 🙄 🤕
That was a past incarnation. You get do overs if you survive. 💀👻

There's more to an eventual silence than just loss, methinks. Perhaps there's a bit of comfort quieting an incessant birdsong in hopes of fully incorporating it's tune into one's self, making for a sort of inner peace.
One less struggle or maybe one less thing to try and reconcile...
Were just some thoughts.
Thank you for the awesome senryú, Colin

Re. death of a songbird.
Dear BV,
Not sure how you want to hear it in your head but in mine it plays splendidly. I think there’s a vulnerable side in all of us. It’s the one most of us work 24/7 to tamp down and protect so I love when the blue bird makes his/her way out to sing freely. This is a lovely poem that does remind me of Bukowski’s poem. While I’m not a fan of his I do like this one as it leans toward a softer more traditional style. What I love about yours is how it sings to me. It’s lyrical and gentle and makes me take a beat or two to rest my weary thoughts and collect my breath for what comes next. Beautiful piece.

Re: Re. death of a songbird.
Hey there, H
I totally get Buk not being everyone's cup of tea. He's definitely a strong delinquent (ha!) voice of a particular era that taps into something viscerally relatable to me. I remember reading Ham On Rye in high school and having a switch turned on, just because of the rawness of admitted feelings and especially the 'I couldn't fucking give a shit what other people think' kind of 'eff you' attitude that the main character of that book, which was pretty much Bukowski, had. Needless to say, I was intrigued and curious, which led to reading more of his poetry. I think I thought it was beyond cool and unlike any other 'poetry' I had experienced up until that point. That ended up being a lifelong lasting kind of curiosity, for this out of place punk, goth girl... hahaha.
I agree with you that his Bluebird poem is certainly a peek at the soft underbelly of the Bukowski degenerate... which is both beautiful to me and utterly captivating. Trying to create rhythmic structure to a poem that is a heartfelt 'slap on the back' atta boy, thank- nod to his, has been a years long thought process. I eventually just hoped that I could come up with something halfway decent and that left me feeling like I tapped into something visceral for myself.
I am over the moon that you could hear my melody... Wow... that's so amazingly freaking awesome!
Here's to taking a beat as to take a little stock...
I sincerely LOVE and adore your genuinely thoughtful comments. They make my day and leave me feeling so much better about my writing and my journeys.
Huge thanks for that and for the generous list add.
You are truly wonderful, dear lady ✨

Hey there, Mary
You're very astute and I'm beyond delighted that you've revisited this one. (thanks for that)
Sometimes, vulnerability can feel like it's the scariest thing we can be, so keeping that part of ourselves under 'lock and key' kinda feels like it's easier and not nearly as messy or potential scary. Finding a way to unlock that goodness we harbor and letting it sing it's song it all it's glory to fruition, is kinda where my mindset traveled. However, there's been so many years and changes of writing decisions, it's hard to nail down my motivations completely... haha.
Thank you for being here and for letting me know your personal takeaway. It really means a lot to me that you wrote me your thoughts/feedback. It's immensely meaningful and so so helpful.... I cannot express my gratefulness, enough...Please know that I truly am.

Love the Dylan quote and the song by Babs is pretty apropos... thanks for sharing that with me, Marks.
Hopefully my inner bluebird finally found comfort in singing it's song aloud as opposed to something that I was kept hidden away.... The song of freedom...

Re. death of a songbird.
I strain
to hear
the bluebird sing
between
the tick
of every tock
incessant are
these
counting hours
fast flying
by
this beating clock
This poem makes me break it down into its constituent parts.
Here I sit
All broken hearted...
That's Charles too. Language first, then insight.
So, your words had me scouring for purpose....the foundation of meaning...requiring this form to practice this function.
All forms function as a point of intimate entanglement in their fullest perspective.

It's those intimate entanglements that go by in the blink of an eye... so swiftly, they are that before you know it midlife is staring you in the face and that bluebird has days when it's quieter than it probably should be.... Or something like that...
Thank you for being so thoughtful and generous, C.
I adore your visits that truly make me think upon each line and my intent, which honestly, isn't always a planned out concrete choice.

Re. death of a songbird.

The impression I got was a person preparing for death. The parallel with the songbird, no longer there (empty cage).
The person, once happy as a songbird, the bluebird (with their eyes of blue). The memories go back to the blissful time, wanting to be that person who "sang". But finding themselves alone, with liquid remedy from the five and dime, as they inhale from a cancer stick. The tears stop when you finally rest in peace.
A dark interpretation. I'm not familiar with Bukowski. So, no idea if I'm way off base. Continue singing "Blue"bird.

Re: Re. death of a songbird.

Yeah, I guess I could see that avenue of thought... The original Bukowski piece was about that bluebird inside being the bit of goodness hidden inside himself and how that kinder, gentler side was potentially something he wished or aspired towards, at times. He was a womanizing, whiskey drinker with a sharp aptitude for putting pen to paper, so that dichotomy between the two sides of himself (even with the softer side being so small and hidden) always fascinated me... I imagined incorporating that smaller side, so that bluebird song wouldn't need to be sung any longer because it was now a bigger part of a whole... or something along those lines anyway... lol
It's a bit nonlinear but I hope it was a good read nonetheless...
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, Leo. You really do have an excellent POV that I cherish you sharing with me.

Your homage to Buk takes me down the lanes of my past through your deft strokes on the keyboard that bring into birth the exquisite sorrow he evoked. Love the gentle melancholy here that sings like the bluebird. The ending is so deeply passionate that I grew teary-eyed. Am listening to jazz piano music as I write your words flow with the melody to bring me into a sentimental mood. No one does this better than you my darling friend. You take me there and beyond.
Much love,
