Indiscriminate

In addiction we hide
pain, shame, and fear
our darkness never far
always remaining near

believing unworthy
never good enough
in our disconnection
anguish we can’t rebuff

assured if we were seen
as we truly are
the detrimental exposure
would surely mar

so we take in something
to change how we feel
oblivious to the thief
that is only there to steal

indiscriminately numbed
vacant our stare
as we become nothing
appearing not to care

but we are bemused
alone in our mind
detached from a world
we find cruel and unkind
