Winter Swoon

When butterflies burst from frigid cocoon
with frozen wings under a crescent moon
drift through the air with crystalline ease
in a time long after the birds and the bees

Ice faeries cling to sparkling fence posts
where frosted air hangs about like ghosts
this dazzling world in a frozen frontier
a fat red man owns a bunch or reindeer

How the North wind blows frigid shards
the cool dragonflies sing like arctic bards
polar bears prowl on soft padded feet
emptiness whistles down a crowded street

Wood smoke drifts through the winter air
light from a window, you can see it so fair
Siberian oasis risen from a crystal wasteland
snow piled high like the dunes of sand

Laugh and sing, there’s no time for sorrow
Northern lights will dance until tomorrow
their swirling colours in a ghostly shimmer
the numb evenings shine with a glimmer

Children play outside with apple red cheeks
in the shadow of snow capped mountain peaks
caught in the dream of winter’s chilled kiss
look in the mirror and take time to reminisce
