Late night insight

Some say I'm incorrigible,
ill-disciplined, hypocritical
and a bad example.
Others call it
Revenge Bedtime Procrastination.
Whichever you believe, it's true;
I'm largely unable (or unwilling)
to go to bed.

When responsibilities of the day
and of work and family life
fall away;
when everyone is asleep
and the house is silent,
I reclaim my solitude
and find that
night time is a creative time.

Without distractions,
the words line up more pleasingly.
Without noise,
musical notes dance into my mind.
Then in bed, when it's dark,
sometimes the best ideas appear.
Maybe that is why
I have considered sleep a waste of time.

"Doesn't that impede your brain?"
I get asked a lot.
Well, not as far as I can tell...
I think it still works well,
but who am I to say?
In any case, life changes
and I have reluctantly agreed
to try harder at going to bed.
Now I'm sleeping more instead,
my creativity has wandered off!

So now I'll have to work harder
at trying to craft something meaningful,
while hoping against hope
to experience one of those rare occasions
when an original composition
or a screenplay
comes to me in a dream.
