The Sinful Religion
The kitchen knives that cut vegetables,
Smilingly slit the throats of the innocents.
The fire that was used for religious purification,
Became viciously hungry for living men.
The eyes that greeted neighbors every morning,
Assumed the job of the nose and the teeth.
Sniffed for the want of human flesh,
And devoured the tender skin of a newly dead child.
How can the murder of one great leader
Transform a feeble into a fanatic?
How can visionaries of intellect supreme
Become sightless and devoid of conscience?
How can the streets that staged communal carnival
Convert into gas chambers for mass assault?
How can humanity die with the death of a man?
Why morality was conveniently forgotten that day?
The dead and the killer were separated by scriptures,
And their deaths resulted in the burning of shrines.
Vengeance became the eleventh commandment,
Satan and human signed a contract of atrocity.
Men were pulled from their bedrooms,
And their relatives performed the last rites before their death.
The tears of the newly widowed,
Failed to cover the nakedness of their bruised bodies.
The orphans failed to distinguish between,
Their burnt fathers and burning mothers.
This was when religion emerged regal,
And humanity died a thousand times,
When would this theistic manacle loosen the grip?
When would man derive courage to break this evil shackle?
Smilingly slit the throats of the innocents.
The fire that was used for religious purification,
Became viciously hungry for living men.
The eyes that greeted neighbors every morning,
Assumed the job of the nose and the teeth.
