Pueblo Cat
Cats and Pueblos
Her mesa smile beams beatific
When enchanted adobe melts into clouds
On a juniper afternoon piled for bread
Our tour a fairy tale on the slippery edge
Where magic meets reality in a melting pot
We choose the path less traveled
On an ancient trail instead of a bus
On our descent a friendly cat chaperones us
But her speech is most uncanny
“I am your nagual guide to keep you safe
Because I know these heights are harrowing.
You see I am a person in the form of a cat.
You must be thinking, ‘there must be a ventriloquist
Nearby giving this furry creature her words.’”
My wife wants a cat when we get home
She tells our friend, “If you come back with us
I’ll feed you warm milk in the evening.”
The cat replies, “That sounds divine. But
I’ve got bread to bake.”
Feline fur becomes a shawl
On a woman whose grin
is Cheshire in a lost surreal
Her mesa smile beams beatific
When enchanted adobe melts into clouds
On a juniper afternoon piled for bread
Our tour a fairy tale on the slippery edge
Where magic meets reality in a melting pot
We choose the path less traveled
On an ancient trail instead of a bus
On our descent a friendly cat chaperones us
