after summer rain
Two pennies
Diametrically laid
Sat in perpendicular fashion
On the fresh-dry-rained-on-the-night-prior
Clean concrete sidewalk
The warmth of the sunshine, the intense heat that comes
With the Kentucky summer
Abated and beaten back, restrained,
By the rainfall that breaks our water-fast
Every two weeks
The air is wet yet dry
So is the trees,
They want to drip rainwater but
They’re wrung dry
The puddles have just drained themselves minutes ago
And the welcome mat, now barely damp
My favorite weather
