Dear Diary: Summer 1979
A bicycle ride in heady air
coaster brakes and screeching tires.
A variety store's tall shelves stocked
with household needs next to the liquor aisle.
Sugary treats cost pocket change,
the old man behind the counters glassy eyes
say, 'Is that all you're buying?'
Star Wars cards and giant gum wads,
lip-chilling popsicle sticks and hoodsie cups.
A superhot car with butt-burning vinyl seats,
clothes swaying on a line, stiff and wind-starched
Mom's cooking dinner on the stove, no microwave,
Dad's plate goes in the warm oven.
Phone rings incessantly, it could be anyone or no one,
just ignore it during dinner.
Laughing about everything, penny pinching
is an automatic.
Metal oscillating fans blow hot air everywhere,
no A/C, wouldn't dream of it,
water from the hose cools us off.
Superballs, tennis for one, that ball's gone.
Don't watch too much TV, it'll give you
square eyes, especially color TV.
For God's sake, get some fresh air!
Went to get more books at the library instead.
My terrible dog is my only true friend,
even the mailman hates her.
Feeling distracted at school, homework is a vice,
I just want to do what I want to do.
Daydreams that just might come true
coaster brakes and screeching tires.
A variety store's tall shelves stocked
with household needs next to the liquor aisle.

the old man behind the counters glassy eyes
say, 'Is that all you're buying?'

True story: I misplaced my diary in a packed car to our summer family vacation. I searched everywhere but never found it, even when we got back home. I never figured out if it fell out of the car on the road or my Dad took it and read it. I looked through all his belongings and never found it, and he denied taking it. There wasn't anything that juicy in it, thank God, just saying I liked a boy and other drivel, but I was careful what i wrote in diaries after that, if he could see me now !

Well, thanks, never thought those days would be, but they are, wish I'd taken even more pictures than I did :)

Dear PR,
I really enjoyed reminiscing my own memories from the details in your poem. The last two lines are stellar because I want those same things right here right now! Great write. H🌷

It's funny how about less than half of the daydreams actually came true, like the one about the all you can eat sundae bar, never became the rock star I dreamed of but it was worth the dream. I didn't have a TV of my own then, so learned to imagine entertainment even with Dad's blaring in the background. It was great how back then you could get away with anything you wanted to do barring parents knowing. Thanks for the comment :)

I love the nostalgia of this entry! I have to wonder if we had the same journal! They used to be so popular with the lock and little key! Now that I think back, I'm unsure what ever happened to mine. I never ran across them in any parental belongings, so I guess that's good! I do think there was some juicy stuff in mine, especially about things my friends shared and how I either felt or wondered about them!
Butt-burning vinyl seats! I remember those too! I bet they were the kind that had the stitching on them, and your legs were indented if you wore shorts or a dress! Everything in this took me back to the 70's! And the ending was fabulous.
I am enjoying your entries and the comradery and spirit of the Team!

I think the car seats did have stiching, and these seams that were like bumps. We called them 'pictures' on our legs when they did that.
About the diary, it did have a lock and key, was pocket size, but it was ridiculous how someone could take sharp scissors and just cut right through that little paper flap and read it, I wondered if my Dad did that. But I guess if the flap was intact you knew no one did, genius design, they don't make em like they used to !
Thanks for reading and reminiscing, it's been great, I've been loving it too !

This is an awesome entry.
Butt burning vinyl seats brings back so many memories.
I took a road trip through Death Valley in a Chevy Super Sport that had no AC back then. My thighs still hurt...
You rocked this one !

Beach days were the biggest leg burner, especially in short shorts with a sunburn and everyones sweat salty legs touching, I still remember the dirty looks and hugging our legs in beach towels. My mom had a mercury comet, those little pop out windows in the back never helped in that heat. Death valley must have been a sauna, compared to New England. Thanks for big liking the memories :)

That's so great to hear, I got back on a bicycle in the last couple years and it really primed my memories of those narrow streets and alleys, thanks for commenting !

I don't remember the 1970s, but really enjoyed this read, as it's the time I was born into. My childhood in the 80s wasn't so different either. Looking back now, it seems like the colours were always bright and the sun shone all the time. I'm sure that wasn't really the case, but it was a fun time to grow up. Make-your-own-fun!

We had a saying, 'morgies fun', referring to the second hand store and the cheap junk they sell and having fun with it. Imaginatiom was key, and a free refrigerator box became a clubhouse. I adored the 80's as well, great fun singing into a hairbrush in a cloud of aquanet. Glad you enjoyed the memories, thanks for commenting !
