March Ides-Eve: You Beside Me
I showed you how beautiful our days could be.
I proved how serious I am
about not being too serious
about anything that doesn't matter.
When I bought tortoiseshell, octagonal
gas station sunglasses
for seven bucks,
and snacks for our newest adventure,
you were right by my side -
the acid was starting to kick in,
and my favorite day ever was soon to begin.
We walked all over the back of the Beast,
sometimes hiking on just to our breathing -
sometimes laughing till the point of weeping,
and stepping
on and on,
as calm as the trees,
you and me -
a forest telling inside jokes,
harmonizing like choirs of bees.
After hours of bounding and bonding
we lay close together
on burnt grass
staring at the sky.
Once upon a time,
I would have said
that right there, I was so happy
I could have died.
But what a silly thing to do
since I knew, with you,
no matter what happens,
joy comes again,
again.
Happiness throws us surprise parties several times a year.
We can't help it.
It's wax in our ears.
I'll never forget
when I left the bed to go shit
and I could still see the TV screen from the hotel bathroom;
feet up on the seat, knees to head,
I'm blissful and easy and watching The Green Knight,
shedding the last of the LSD,
vision still sparkly.
And your voice comes
to greet me
reading the poem that inspired the movie.
It felt like belonging to me...
I didn't even have to ask -
you know well I love
to listen to you read.
I sat there in the happy dark,
by myself and with you all at once,
listening,
knowing we've already built a sky together
much bigger than the weather
any day can bring.

about anything that doesn't matter.
