Troubled souls (22)
I think that poets are troubled souls.
One great Québecois poet,
Émile Nelligan suffered from schizophrenia.
Others come to poetry after
Depressions or burn-outs
Or worse, a combination of both.
It's either write or go insane.
Or fall prey to grand evils
Such as drugs and alcohol.
Some poets, no doubt
Truly end up in the gutter
(Was that the case with Jack Kerouac? I forget)
But then, hopefully
One day they see some sort of light
Their inner strength helps them
Get back on their feet
And they create jewels
Which oftentimes serve to help others
Stay away from the ditch.
