some die from the lack
of love and are like bits
of trash blowing about
in a dirty wind,

some die from having
too much of the wrong
kind of love and suck up
so far into themselves
that they disappear into
self-loathing and disgust.

then there are those of
us that have survived
both,

the rejections,
the unrequited
feelings: like
ants hardly
noticed,

the nearly getting our
anatomy cut off by feral
human animals.

we smile like cats that
have found the best spot
on a window ledge to curl
up on and sleep under
the smile of the sun.

we sit in our backyards at
night, smoking and watch
the weeds take over
our lawns,

and we wait,

and we
wait,

for nothing
in
particular.
