Jane Doe
she was found dead
left naked in a hole
with no identification
just another Jane Doe
stored in the morgue
now stiff and cold
the police uncertain
how she died alone
signs of rape indicate
she was bought and sold
smuggled to America with
promises of a new home
used and abused by a
syndicate with no soul
kept prisoner and denied
freedom to use a phone
valued only by her Johns &
never meant to grow old
forever lost to her family &
condemned to die unknown
left naked in a hole
with no identification
just another Jane Doe
stored in the morgue
now stiff and cold
the police uncertain
how she died alone
signs of rape indicate
she was bought and sold
smuggled to America with
promises of a new home
used and abused by a
syndicate with no soul
kept prisoner and denied
freedom to use a phone
valued only by her Johns &
never meant to grow old
forever lost to her family &
condemned to die unknown

Oh wow Rainy.
So sad. Smuggling is very real.
It should be taken a lot more seriously then it is.
Thanks for giving her a voice amigo.

I agree with the above comments. Your poem creates the need to stop and reflect and that’s powerful.

Succinct. You hit the nail on the head with this one. The trafficking of women, of humans...will it ever end?

It is so sad to think of all the Jane Doe's who will never have the opportunity to live and love facing such atrocities and fear. Who will never be identified lost to their families and loved ones forever. I agree with all of the previous comments, this is definitely a bold write that makes one reflect on this sad truth.

I couldn't agree more. It is truly tragic. Although difficult to write, it felt nessasary. Thank you and I'm glad you think so. A sad truth can be powerful. Thanks for stopping by. Your comments are always a source of joy for me!

This is very heartbreaking.... My heart aches and prays for those thousands of girls who go through hell in the form of trafficking, physical n sexual abuse...such a tragic reality that this world is filled with such evil people who ruin the lives of others....
This is an excellently crafted poem... You have yet again proved that you are a versatile poet. I'm glad you spoke on this issue .

A Poem of Experience
This elicits our sympathy for the victim.
I like the Blake-ean appeal to a melodramatic view of the world--Jane Doe is a victim, no more and no less. Black & white, good and evil. Innocence & Experience.
But the broadness of the writing, which serves the characterization of Jane Doe, undermines the 2nd half of the poem, and brings forth un-anticipated, & probably un-wanted, questions:
Was she raped? Or not?
Was she a victim of sex-trafficking (btw, MS 13 has the market cornered when it comes to under-age sex trafficking in North Am)?
Did she pay (either with cash or with sex) for smugglers to bring her to the US? And did these smugglers have sex with her against her will?
Was she sex-trafficked in the States ("America" has become a construct, abstract)? A surprising number of MS 13s vics are--mainly black daughters of...single black mothers, hence more vulnerable to that kind of exploitation). There's nothing in the poem that--or that would be evident in a rape--that would convince me she "had" to brought across a border.
And I don't know how "rape" would indicate she was raped while being smuggled across the border--is that what I'm supposed to believe? That she was raped--in such a way--that it indicated forensically that she was raped by people who raped her--forcibly--after she asked them to smuggle her--is that what supposedly happened?
Another example of "asking the wrong questions": if she was "bought," why would the syndicate who bought her, in order to smuggle her into the US, kill her? That doesn't make sense, unless we're talking Adrenochrome harvesting.
What does it mean to say, "uncertain how she died alone"? What does that mean? It *sounds* good, but doesn't mean anything to this reader.
When you use the word raped, do you mean "raped," as in, had sex? Or do you mean signs of "forced" entry, etc.? You know, like pre-hashtag PoundMeToo, or Post-hashtag PoundMeToo?
Essentially, these are the wrong kinds of questions--the questions you don't want the reader to ask.
The explanation needs to be neat, make intuitive as well as rational sense.
The ending doesn't, and that means the explanation undermines the need for the reader to have complete sympathy for the victim.
Enjoyed, & nice to see your work!
