OM is everything

Om

Om is everything

Ospreys circle the day
Signaling danger
But what is there to fear

Fire is the light inside
I closed my eyes to see how bright
Giving thanks to nature and how she nurtures

I crawled inside the womb of earth
Damp and dark and warm
Touching toes with my brothers and sisters
Our voices carried soft and small at first
Ujjayi, breath began to warm

Steam and sweat formed beads that rolled down the face and onto the chest tracing down through the core, Uddiyana bandha, then reaching the woven floor

Om is everything

As the vibrations grew my fears again brewed
Fight or fly said the Osprey
I held on tight to my breath and the light in my chest, Pranayama
The earth  womb filled with chants
Voices raised and rose like heat
We yelled and screamed and sang until our bellies filled with child-like laughter and the light was too bright to contain

I open my eyes
Today I am an Osprey
Soft and bright and light
Reborn

Om is everything

Author's Note
This writing was inspired by my first time experiencing a traditional Temezcal ceremony while visiting and practicing Ashtanga yoga on a retreat in Oaxaca, MX. For me, the extreme heat and darkness and unknown exposed a lot of my anxieties and insecurities. During the sweat I referred back to a tool we had been focusing on all week to control the mind: breath. Using breath I was able to conquer my mind and my body. After what felt like hours, the sweat ended, and I was the last one to leave the womb. Reborn into the world. Pretty apt for my nature.

I’m grateful to the local indigenous Shamanesses that helped guide our journey and shared their stories and traditions.
