Education- not justified
From a very tender age we were told that our future depends on it
Made to believe our entire lives rely upon it.
So we dedicated our lives to it
Ventured countless days
Endless mornings.
Come rain or hellfire
We were whipped to attend it
Our parents spent all their lives savings so that they can afford us this thing
They drown in debt for it
But even with it, nothing is guaranteed.
This is it, education.
Yes, maybe there are some good memories
And some people actually make it
It also feels good to go matric dances
Camps and the fast life of campuses.
But no one tells you the depression that comes with it,
The bullying and the systematic emprisonment that's built upon it.
To most of us it feels like lottery.
The success that was promised to come
with it,
It's hard to find
The petty jobs most of us end up working
Are just ends with means that ain't justified.
Made to believe our entire lives rely upon it.
So we dedicated our lives to it
Ventured countless days
Endless mornings.
Come rain or hellfire
We were whipped to attend it
Our parents spent all their lives savings so that they can afford us this thing

Very interesting poem…really makes me think, especially as someone who just sent a child off to college for the first time

Yeah it's really a conundrum since the numbers don't lie,
But you have done your best as a parent, I'm 💯% sure your intention are good...
It's just this life is f'd up
Thank you for stopping by

Yes, applaud....
This I agree with you completely
The issue is just that those options are really not that available...
It's even worse here in Africa public schools don't have proper facilities for extra murals,
So there's really no proper foundation for either art or talent.....
Thank you R

Re. Education- not justified
The problem is not the education but the content of it.
There's a difference between education for self-reliance and education for employment.
Most of us tend to fall on the latter whereas the former is what we need for financial freedom.
It sounds good to collect statistics about increasing number of graduates.
In countries where there's a skills-based education system the economies tend to perform much better.
Unfortunately we need to be led by innovators to be able to increase the pie & stop cutting the existing one.
Your message is thought-provoking and very relevant for our times.

Well stated bro....
There are too many issues that need to be addressed.....
Cause as far as I'm aware, we are told that degrees and office jobs will make us millionaire....
It's tough...

(If pure survival is the most pressing concern, I think learning a trade and going into business for yourself is a cool thing to do. And perhaps pursuing higher education at a later time.)
Some have proposed that the education system is about churning out workers; others have proposed it is a socialization process, perhaps one in the same.
... I am of the belief that those that are divergent thinkers, that genuinely love to learn, benefit the most from education, in all forms. I think this extends beyond the degree.
... But the degree is a great accomplishment, in every sense, job or no job; I feel education is a form of initiation, and I deeply respect those who are successful in such endeavors, as it takes discipline & commitment.
... I think when it comes down to it, all you have is you. Owning things is only an illusion. All you really have is you. Your mental/physical/spiritual self.
And education in all forms only cultivates and helps to further cultivate this self.
Education is a life long process. The more we learn the more we realize we do not know.
... A thought provoking write pOt.
(And I truly believe that it is never too late.)
... (I think it is of paramount importance to learn to invest/start a business.)

Very true, the rich countries rely mostly upon SME's
The development of one self....
But here 2 out of 3 start ups fail
Because of the indoctrination that without school you are nothing....
Thank you very much

Re. Education- not justified
Very thought provoking my Sough African King.. I was home schooled by my grann in Haiti, she did not believe in the institution of conventional education. I was taught several lessons from some of the villager's parent, proper English was my biggest hurdle... to propel my mind further was from reading several dictionaries, the entire Encyclopedias volumes, and her blurred lessons in the middle of her seeing her patients... I look back and smile bless my grann's heart...
However, she made sure I was thoroughly educated, got a student visa to the states, and paid for my five years of collage.. education to me is within the core of the mind... its moreso, about basic physiology to know right from wrong of your mindset, theology of the world/cultures to understand and accept indifference in others, and math adding and subtracting mainly our money and calculating our time in a productive manner.. an insightful piece here

I really believe in home schooling
I think it's easy better than conventional form of schooling...
And your granny, someone give that women a bells
(I applaud all here efforts)....
Well all I'm saying formal education isn't for everyone one
And it shouldn't be posed as the "key to success"
Shouldn't be forced upon children and those who do not prefer it shouldn't be condemned

Speaking from English culture, So often formal education seems concentrated into a few years at the start of life, which is good for early developers but there are late developers who might not have all the skills when they reach school leaving age but do pick up with further adult education. I had a mix of both, some subjects I developed early, others took further years of part time classes to attain. I was going to go to university to qualify to be a librarian but my health got in the way when I was diagnosed epileptic at 18 which disrupted my higher education agenda and the start of my working life as well as learning to drive. (It was in an earlier decade whereas today I would have been offered more support now that it is no longer stigmatising to seek help for mental problems.)
I am doing different but no less intelligent work, having done much part time education along the way.

I'm really sorry 😔
It was really never my intentions to invoke/hurt anyone (if I did)....
I agree with you, there should be basic education that would apply to day to day from an early age
And make it such that later it's more of work based learning....
Yet my problem it's only with the system and it's design....
I'm sorry about your experience

The memories do not hurt, so you have opened no old wounds, although I did look back with sometimes anger on the two years I did my GCEs O and A levels after what I felt the strain led me to. I did not enjoy being asked about them in job interviews.
I was probably someone who today would have had a gap year as well as counselling opportunities but in those days that wasn't fashionable, there was much prejudice against what was perceived as 'dropping out' (not so dirty a word in America, as I understood, where you hear of success stories among ex college drop outs). I also had unhelpful advice from well meaning (now dead) relatives who discouraged me from hinting the 'e' word on job applications (but they were of a generation where epilepsy was too closely associated with insanity.)
However, I did get my work life on track by 27 and am still holding down a working life at 62.

You really have a good story to tell,
I can only imagine where you come from and the hardships you had to endure
You should "write yourself a poem"
Actually that what my latest poem is titled, would appreciate it if you read it.
Well I guess since you are here I guess insanity left sanity behind....
You are a living proof that nothing can't be achieved
Surely I'll follow you from now
Thank you very much
