in your eyes
When a woman is talking to you, listen to what she says with her eyes.
—Victor Hugo
i saw a song
in your eyes,
when they looked at me
this morning.
could i be wrong:
are there lies
where dreams should run free,
death scorning?
i saw the tears
in your eyes,
when i said, goodbye,
my darling.
now all the fears
that arise
are my alibi,
uncharming.
i saw my death
in your eyes,
when their lids they closed
at evening.
a swift, sharp breath,
no disguise,
doth my end impose
with grieving.
i saw my life
in your eyes,
when you called me to
my senses.
a broken-knife
compromise
doth for us renew
love’s lenses.
