Old Love
is knowledgeable and wise;
it didn't allow bitterness
to strangle out Life;
but, weeded
its garden instead
Old Love
has experienced pain,
healed inflicted wounds
by lovers and friends
and cherishes
each moment it lives
without regret
Old Love
isn't afraid to try—
it doesn't lock away its heart
because it knows
even through loss
it will survive

i quite like this, A. it pushes back against the thought that 'old' is careful. while it may be careful, it isn't afraid of risk. a fine line to walk.

Does Old Love object to more stanzas? I think you should keep adding to this. It would make for a delightful ongoing series. 📝❤

LOL! Old Love knows when to let go and let Be! It would be a cute series of thoughts, that is for sure. You know my poetry is never complete.

The older love gets, the less it has to be afraid of because the less far it has to fall, or maybe everything is that way when it gets old, the experience becomes everything.as opposed to some goal. This is a phillsophical one that made me wonder, I liked your example, very nice thoughts :)

Dear A,
I found this poem profound in its reflection. Taking stock in my thoughts on affairs of the heart and love I fell quite short of the mark by these definitions of Old Love.
“ it doesn't lock away its heart” but it did and the key got tossed. I thoroughly appreciated reading this as it provided me with a great sense of renewal about letting go and releasing pain through love.

I do hope that happens for you, Honoria. Too many hold onto the pain of Love vs moving through it. You deserve all the love possible. ❤

Beautiful and inspiring words about "old love", which in my opinion are as "New" as the morning dew. Thanks for sharing. O

Yes indeed true love ideally should be without bitterness but perfect love is hard to find . Your poem is fab in metaphor and advice. Kudos!

Our culture tends to vaunt young love, but old love should be the ideal. Young love is intense but also short-sighted and vain, where old love is deep and secure in itself. Thank you for a lovely little poem. I want it engraved on a coffee mug!

Thank you for the beautiful comment, RiAN. You are so right in that love is the key. I don't know who wrote to you, but their observations about love in even destruction were very astute. I believe everything that happens to us contributes to our evolution toward unconditional love. I am curious as to what the song is now, because I truly believe there are no goodbyes. We never see each other for the last time, essence-wise, that is.

I love the concept, the sobriety and an understanding that smiles at problems and weeds the garden. Congratulations.

Absolutely! Hopefully it's everyone's, CMV! Or at least it should be once we age and learn the lessons. IF we learn the lessons, that is. Thank you!
