Nell Poins

call me Poins

her chestnut brown hair
draped down her back
covering her corset

call me Nell

just like the character
in the play by William
begging for applause
from a nameless audience

like a the tooth of a dragon
her danger sinks deep
dripping poison into aster veins
stained purple, virgin blood drawn

as my love leaps like a hoptoad
playing tricks of the trade
as burglers rob travellers
on the highways, how can I
get the Prince of Wales

To notice little Nelly Poins

he sees me as one of the boys
another scoundrel,
a gentle thief of men's hearts
who he believes would betray his trust

Nell Poins is my name

I may be a robber
a highwayman (who is a woman)
but sweet honey Hal
will you notice sweet Nell

for someone more then a scoundrel
