Modern DEMOCRACY Comes From the MAGNA CARTA And England's Parliamentarianism
Forget Greece, etc. as the source of democracy.
If it weren't for Britain's leadership, there wouldn't be any democracy around today.
Greece's example is just too distant and ancient.
What was different in Britain that enabled democratic values to thrive/dominate ??
Well the MAGNA CARTA was forced upon King John in 1215.
It was a power-sharing agreement between the king and the barons.
The English king gave up certain powers:
he was no longer an "absolute monarch" !!
All the other kings(of Spain, France, etc) were absolute rulers.
England was the ONLY nation where the king had to share power !!
This led eventually to Parliament gaining more and more power !!
In 1215 when the Pope heard about the barons gaining power via
the Magna Carta, he excommunicated all the barons !! SHAME ON THE POPE !!
It shows the Papacy has often been anti-democratic !!
In other words, on the wrong side of history !!
