Lichens are not really one organism; they're a mutually beneficial relationship between a fungus and an algae. An ecosystem within themselves, not parasitic on their substrate. Highly sensitive to air pollution, which hurts one of the organisms and therefore the whole. Usually the first thing to grow after a fire, thriving in the most extreme environments on the planet. There is so much to the bio world yet to be discovered and used to benefit us. While I was a crap science student I very much admire those of you who can understand it and put it to good use for the rest of us. Your poem has given me pause for thought on how lucky we are to have gained the knowledge we have so far. H🌷
