Scarred Bark
Tall barren trees with fallen leaves
Outstretched arms as they grieve
Praying for relief only given by the Sun
Always in the crosshairs of man's gun
Wanting to run before someone yells timber
Evading the fate of being gone 'til November
Embers of their dreams are being extinguished
While many take a blind eye to how they're anguished
Some choose to still wish upon the falling stars
Even though their barks are stark with keloid scars
From afar, where you are, they seem to be whining
Ignoring how, during every season, they are dying
Outstretched arms as they grieve
Praying for relief only given by the Sun
Always in the crosshairs of man's gun
Wanting to run before someone yells timber
Evading the fate of being gone 'til November
Embers of their dreams are being extinguished
While many take a blind eye to how they're anguished
Some choose to still wish upon the falling stars
Even though their barks are stark with keloid scars
From afar, where you are, they seem to be whining
Ignoring how, during every season, they are dying

Kind of sad. With mankind expanding over the planet like an unstoppable plague of locusts, how long will it be before the earth is as barren of trees as the surface of Mars?

The Canadian Psychologist Jordan Peterson warns against using such cynical and negative views on humanity. Humans are not a plague. They have the capacity to do much good and to protect many things. There are those who waste and are greedy but not all are. Some are deeply respectful of the earth and nature. I don't want people associating humans with a plague.

👏🏾👏🏾Bravo, Brother. This one spoke to my soul. Love how you tell of the anguish that so many are going thru these days. For there are many who are dying inside, yet no one notice them before the tragic thing happens. Deep, My Brother, Deep.

It's a sad reality what society is doing the environment and the treatment of these ecological systems will have long lasting effects for generations. Your piece is heartbreaking and yet eye opening, bringing awareness, one bark at a time.
Great work.
Great work.

Nice metaphors for what I feel is taking place in today's political climate and the treatment of disenfranchised people for over 150 years, and it definitely speaks the truth.
A provoking read we all need to ponder on.
As for H/C; Being a rhythm & rhyme junkie, I can see where some changes here and there could help make this a smoother read, at least for me, but isn't that usually the case between writers.
All in all I think it's good writing with a worthwhile message, which seems to be harder and harder to come by these days.

Thank you. Out of curiosity, what changes would you have made? What does H/C stand for? Honest critique?

I love tree awareness poems, I thought of the giant redwoods and how scarred they must be, especially ones that have been damaged by man. There's alot of human symbolism there, trees are a symbol of death methods in our dark past, but if we keep our feet firmly planted in the ground and reach for the sky, we can be as strong as trees, nice entry :)

You're right. There is a lot of human symbolism. Thanks for the compliment.

Every holiday season I get sad to see all the beautiful trees chopped down, lined up & awaiting a sale. Such flagrant waste of life for profit & temporary enjoyment. Thank you for entering this poem in the Unnatural Nature comp.
