Ice cream

The mercury was rising fast, so parched
the wilted whitened grass,
my tongue its dry as red sandstone
I seek the cream upon the cone

As the heat is beating down. I gasp
to times when I just let it pass
and mirages of milkmaids pulling udders
overflowing pails of white, to smother

As I dream, the virgin dome with its topping
once I start there's no stopping
the unctuous  smooth, flows round the teeth
pleasures chill upon the lips, that greets

And starts endorphins spinning
slurping. savouring its crest so brimming
dribbles falling cause alarm
scoop them up before they warm

Ambrosia, surely sent by Nordic gods
from the freezer " just the job"
a craving from the cradle to the grave
ever trapped, to be its slave
