The Braid
kumihimo
does not become;
rather, is created
in achingly slow
turns of hand;
silken strands
connect the web
of practice
muscle memory,
leaning forward
into Kaizen
remembers
each placement
across the marudai
from this day,
this moment
to the next one,
where my fingers
find their positions,
with new proficiency
does not become;
rather, is created
in achingly slow
turns of hand;
silken strands
connect the web
of practice
muscle memory,
leaning forward
into Kaizen
remembers
each placement
across the marudai
from this day,
this moment
to the next one,
where my fingers
find their positions,
with new proficiency

Very nicely written , Luna ,
about a braid that is more
than a braid , yet reality...;)

It's amazing how the last 3 lines weigh so much to the moment of life going on right now. It hits hard. Made me smile from ear to ear to see it. 😊

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you and Ahavati were drinking from the same teapot while writing your entries. This is phenomenal, especially the pacing.

Thank you, JB! I am honored - It was Ahavati’s beautiful words yesterday that inspired this spill. She has such a way with her arrangement and spacing; it’s like pulling up a pillow to sit by the fire while she dispenses her wisdom 💜.

I love this intimate glance into this beautiful Japanese artform. Thanks for the new vocabulary. The significance of "Kaizen" is especially comforting and elevates the spirituality of the piece. Brava, Luna❣❣ When I first began reading I thought it would be Native American piece about a braiding ritual.

Textile work is a great way to experience Kaizen -- every few seconds you get a new chance through slow repetitive meditative action. I like the way the poem captures its essence.

I’m always in awe of how each and every turn of the strings creates a new opportunity to get it just right. Thank you for reading and for the kindness, Josh 💜

Dear L,
This poem threw back the hands of time when my nieces were little girls and they’d want me to French braid their hair. I used to love the transformation not only from the hair itself but their faces when the braiding was done. It brought exquisite moments of pure joy and love with each plait.
Love the reflection and peacefulness in this poem. H🌷

I’ve always loved styling someone’s hair; it’s such a loving act and it’s meditative in its own way. I was not blessed with girls, but my niece was always gracious enough to let me braid her hair. Such lovely memories, Honoria, thank you for sharing yours 💜
