Devotion and a Bichon Named Norman
chasing the sun
to be the first in line
for the new day;
I’m an overeager schoolgirl
sitting on the couch
three full hours
before my date arrives,
trying not to wrinkle
my new dress
except...
I refuse to wait for anyone
and I don’t wear dresses
***
my soulmate is a Bichon
named Norman,
because who doesn’t
want a man
who throws his head back
and howls at the moon
until you finally return
from taking out the trash?
devotion is a slippery slope
when fresh water
and absentminded
pats on the head
feel like more
than you deserve
I’d set him straight,
but I’m still learning this
for myself
***
I have no idea where
any of this is going,
my grip is slipping
from the safety rails;
I once set out
with matches in my pocket,
not realizing my mistake;
I’m not the only one
with a penchant
for setting fires -
the world was already ablaze
and I’m just a frog in a pot,
thinking it’s another warm day
in the swamp
to be the first in line
for the new day;
I’m an overeager schoolgirl
sitting on the couch
three full hours
before my date arrives,
trying not to wrinkle
my new dress
except...
