Knocking Words

Words gentle knock on the mind’s tide
Pushing new salt on old wounds
Currents that crash into the past
In the rhythm of a serenity prayer
Never fully free or  forgiven
The tide breaks hard on old shells
Making small splinters of yourself
Always present, ready to cut, ready to hurt
The words within the tide’s knock
Drag you beyond the horizon
Or seat you safely on the shore
To watch the sunset into your past
The tide faithfully  comes regardless
Always knocking on the shores of your mind
