Out Of The Woods
I was five and she was four
we were two little girls
going out to explore
down by the Pennsylvania woods
it was I feeling overly brave
who came up with the notion
to climb the hill to see
what we could see
so we climbed the hill
had just gotten to the top
when I looked out between the trees
that's when I saw the tree stump
and then I pointed it out
so my sister could see it
all at once the stump stood up
and we realized it was not a tree
there stood the first black bear
we had ever seen
looking taller than a tree
I looked at her and she looked at me
"It's a bear," I said and we started to scream
then we slid down the hill and started to run
wondering just how far the bear had come
I was terrified to turn around and look
my whole body trembled and my feet felt weak
I had to see where the bear was then
so I stopped and looked back
staring through the trees
it was then I realized we had gotten free
that big black bear was nowhere
to be seen
still we ran the whole way home
grateful for each other and that we were still alive
we were two little girls
going out to explore
down by the Pennsylvania woods
it was I feeling overly brave
who came up with the notion
to climb the hill to see
what we could see
so we climbed the hill
had just gotten to the top
when I looked out between the trees
that's when I saw the tree stump
and then I pointed it out
so my sister could see it
all at once the stump stood up
and we realized it was not a tree
