Be Strong, Always
Don't ever buy their lies of ease,
Don't believe there is unearned rest,
Don't listen for another second,
Trust your strength instead.
They mean to offer kind support,
They believe in what they say,
You don't have to be strong all the time,
Because their own strength gave way.
Your strength never takes a holiday,
Your strength never punches out,
Your strength never leaves you stranded,
Even when you're sure it's running out.
Your strength is made to endure this,
Your strength is made to fight,
Your strength didn't happen yesterday,
And it won't disappear overnight.
Your strength is made for testing,
Again and again and again,
It's meant to take the pounding,
And then rise up one more time to win.
Your strength has never failed you,
It was you who failed your strength,
When others said you didn't have to be strong,
At least not all the time.
Cast aside their pathetic attempts,
To keep you in the dirt,
You be strong, and you hold on,
Let your strength do the work.
When they tell you it's okay to rest,
When they suggest you take a knee,
When they croon you don't have to go on anymore,
You keep picking up speed.
Because you have all you ever need,
To do impossible things,
And you be strong, always,
Because yes, you have to be!
Hold on tight to who you are,
Hold on to your strength,
It is your sword against self doubt,
It alone will find you peace.

Author's Note
Inspired by a conversation with a friend who once told me during a particularly hard time in my life journey, "You don't have to be strong all the time." What I wanted to say more than anything was, "Okay." What I realized, however, was that there was no one else. I answered through a whole rain forest of tears, "Yes, yes I do. If not me, then who?"

You have to be strong all the time otherwise they will walk all over you, as you have no doubt realised.
