Allegorical Anomalies
retreating like waves
afraid of their own shore
back into my corner
I can’t tell if this is meant
as punishment,
or for my own safety;
until now it’s never mattered
I wonder at all of them
the they in they say
walking about so
nonchalantly
on mundane, routine days
nondescript in demeanor;
it makes old folks out of us
every last one,
but far too soon
for what we get out of the deal
who do they think they are?
wearing their skin so well,
unburdened, unafraid
of what lies beneath
the parchment thin exterior
we all write our words upon
to tell everyone
daring enough
to read them
precisely who we are,
what they are to expect;
and I’m desperate to ask them,
what is that like?
afraid of their own shore
back into my corner
I can’t tell if this is meant
as punishment,
or for my own safety;
until now it’s never mattered
I wonder at all of them
the they in they say
walking about so
nonchalantly
on mundane, routine days
nondescript in demeanor;
it makes old folks out of us
every last one,
but far too soon
for what we get out of the deal
who do they think they are?
wearing their skin so well,
unburdened, unafraid
of what lies beneath
the parchment thin exterior
we all write our words upon
to tell everyone
daring enough
to read them
precisely who we are,
what they are to expect;
and I’m desperate to ask them,
what is that like?
