Dusk in the Desert
I swear, this summer’s sun
still scorches close to night
as I must have been the wettest there
returning home from my desert hike!
Got to take photos of desert fare;
saw a monster, orange and black
looked no worse for wear
nor thirsty for a damp redact!
Getting difficult now for me to see
few streetlamps light my way
relying on starlight skies for me
‘fore denizens emerge to play.

Love how you've applied this to your personal experience of living in the desert, Tallen. Also how you extended it from Millay's imagery to the evening walk homeward. Solid imagery and the essence of reveling in nature without disturbing it is palpable.

The desert is a wondrous site as very often see more of what is in than what is out.

i always get excited when i come across
Desert Life in movement.....
the many varieties of insects
the Tortoises, scorpions, woolly tarantulas (always tempted to take one home)
the Gilas ...........
These small beasties are often missed by the passing eye of many a hiker.

I really enjoyed this Tallen very much so. I was really 'there' within the poem.
I will be checking Millay out. I have feeling I will like her work.
Thanks for sharing.

Reading this over again and felt compelled to comment :)
This is a wonderful "rendition" if you will. The succinct desert imagery on the walk home, combined with the beautiful meter really takes the reader to a special place. You captured a spirit of wonderment with this one. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem, Tallen, and best of luck in the comp :)

Excellent job, Tallen. "Afternoon On A Hill" was about being an observer, taking everything in through the physical senses, but without disturbing it. You owned it with a your own personal vantage point. Good luck in the challenge!
