My Hurt

Maybe I wasn't raised right
Maybe theres nobody holding me tight
One person or a million
No matter who I'm with
It's by myself that I lay with awake at night

To God I pray every day
Please let me in when I finally
come around his way
Please teach me how to pass the test
Please help me be kind to all the rest

But please understand
There's a whole lot of hurt in my soul
Your pain is your pain and mine is mine
But I've been fighting the anger since long before I became a man.

It is absolutely true that I do always try
I swear deep down inside I think I'm a nice guy
I will give a stranger the shirt off my back
I wear a smile by default
But please don't make me feel cornered
and keep coming because I will attack

My smile hides the strain
Of fighting an uphill battle
Always trying to do what's right
Staying positive in the face of all my pain

Call me complicated or oh so easy
Its pretty damn simple to get along with me
I know I'm so far from perfect
But please we can talk it out
However if you keep pushing on me
The best you can hope for is me walking out

A few may be afraid of my bite
But anyone who's seen it
Knows my bark is out of sight.
You can tell your family, your friends
Probably call the police, you just might.
I'm telling you I absolutely would never hurt anyone
But you've stepped into a tangled mess
of emotions and I'm vulnerable here
So you're seeing the worst of me
And I'm embarrassed to admit
It's not my intellect, but my pain you must now fight.

You might think and tell me
That you've been hurt too
If that's what you're thinking
I'm sure you'll say how grateful I should be
Because clearly I haven't been hurt
Near as bad as you
