Baptism By Fire
I have a will to survive
And my will is supposedly free
But nothing in life comes free
So is there a cost to survival?
Many view a person’s ability
to walk through the fires of life
as a sign of strength.
Maybe that’s true
when you encounter
just a few fires
on your journey through life’s terrain.
But when you spend most of your life
dancing through the flames,
It’s not about strength anymore.
It’s more like the heavens
are vigilantly watching you
gracefully frolic
across the surface of hell,
Patiently waiting
to see if you’ll come out
with horns or wings
And my will is supposedly free
But nothing in life comes free
So is there a cost to survival?
Many view a person’s ability
to walk through the fires of life
as a sign of strength.
Maybe that’s true
when you encounter
just a few fires
on your journey through life’s terrain.
But when you spend most of your life
dancing through the flames,
It’s not about strength anymore.
It’s more like the heavens
are vigilantly watching you
gracefully frolic
across the surface of hell,
Patiently waiting
to see if you’ll come out
with horns or wings

This is true...
We all go through our own crucible but what matters is how we come out on the other side...
Greatly written

That is true. But sometimes we go through hell to come clean through the other side. Keep on writing.

Fire destroys everything it touches, yet it can also cleanse. An old forest can be wiped out only for a new one to grow from the ashes. Earth is a mixture of both heaven and hell, a testing ground for demons and angels to prove their worth. Those that survive the greatest trials are a mixture of good and evil. Why have either horns or wings when its better to have both.

You are not wrong. I agree, both can be good. Balance is the secret to life. As for this piece, it was a very simple line with a much more complex meaning: we can come out of of our struggles angry, resentful, and cruel. Or we can come out of them with deeper understanding, compassion, and strength... it’s our choice.

This is a great poem Julia...that existential journey that we are all born into...as the great American Poet, Charles Bukowski once wrote...What matters most is how well you walk through the fire.

Hey Julia! A great poem you've got there; loved it. Sometimes it gets to you, and you have to embrace it; it's fate. I loved it!

Dear Julia, you are wise beyond your years. You make me think and I like thinking 😁 Wouldn't it be great to actually experience free will. I do know that it is my prerogative to do whatever the hell I want to but who would that hurt and what would be the consequences of my actions? (I know boring, right?)The following passages touched me most:
"And my will is supposedly free"
"Patiently waiting
to see if you’ll come out
with horns or wings"
Bravissima bella poeta! 😘

Re: Re. Baptism By Fire
I can not express how much I appreciate this comment. You get me. I believe our greatest gifts are sometimes our heaviest burdens. And you have identified two of mine. I have been told I am wise beyond my years since I was just a little girl. Some type of gift I acquire from living through so much pain. I also struggle with the free will component. I am hypersensitive to the feelings of others. I can not act or speak without first considering its impact on those around me. Which has many positives, but can be very paralyzing and restricting as well. Anyway thank you for your insight!

We are definitely kindred spirits in both hypersensitivity and the considerations of other's feelings which I agree, in most cases is the right .thing to do. I am a big proponent of this statement that has been attributed to many, "Other peoples opinions of you are none of your business." That said, there are instances where we should speak up to either protect ourselves, as you have done big time, or to protect another from, perhaps, making mistakes we've already made. You're awesome 😉

I agree. I don’t necessarily care what opinion people have of me. They have a right to whatever they think or feel. However, I will ALWAYS care about how I make people feel. I have a responsibility to be mindful of and responsible with the impact I have on other people.

I feel you. It seems like the more fires I encounter the worse I get, not the better or braver. They say, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger"... yeah, I don't know about that.

I agree with this comment so much! I feel it too. There is a common biblical reference about how God doesn’t give us more then we can handle.. and Mother Theresa’s response was “I wish he didn’t trust me so much!” I think of her sentiment often! Thank you for reading and commenting.

I think everyone comes out with horns and wings and depending on the tune being danced to denotes horns or wings. Great job loved it

You are good with words !
This poem has strength and float and never runs out of gas.
Uplifting with fervor
You’ve seen some things, no doubt

I found this one very meaningful for me and beautifully written. You may find another I wrote 'Knock' interesting. I feel like you may understand some of the deeper meaning.
Anyway, I loved this.
