Bruises Fade

Red
Swollen
The indentation of your hand
across my cheek
Heat radiating from my face
Burning
Stinging sensation
Bruises fade
But the wounds linger

Fear
Shock
Tears streaming down my face
Quick gasps of air
As the world around me slowly fades
An evilness staring back at me is all I see
Bruises fade
But the wounds linger

Betrayal
Devastation
Heart shattered in a million pieces
Where once a beloved man had stood
A pathetic coward took his place
Bruises fade
But the wounds linger.

Author's Note
It wasn’t the first or only time he laid hands on me. But it was the last. All the times before, I protected him, defended him and excused his abuse. But that moment, there was something so insulting about being smacked across my face... I still haven’t quite found the words to adequately articulate it. I still don’t understand it, I had experienced worse abuse than that and been more terrified and horrified. But it was that single moment that I called the cops.
