Image for the poem eventide

eventide

the witching hour trembled midnights with illusions
and by its light damned---

darkness conjured
bringer of the harbinger for the horde
they shriek obscenities
blood lust was on the winds

the shadows close in
they taste fear
the pure of soul are heavily prized
demons circle giggling with glee
they command the rite

midnight rage with a cult following
the faithful with a pension for death keep watch
fear glitter and glow in the night's orb
taloned hands beheld the mystery

the mists swirled and unveiled the eventide
a chant called to the mystics
the evening wept, the masses pressed in

listening ears were held rapt as the winds keen
then approached the twilight
and ushered in the cruelty

the black descended on the crowd
it's ceremony spoke in riddles
the morose horde query the crimson order
on the altar of sacrifice they slay the innocence

then chimed the hour of knowledge
understanding dawn
the cryptic nature revealed inside the sacred solemn

one last breath then succumb
the night's prey undone
the sun rose no more
