I recall watching Elton John play that song that year at Princess Diana's televised funeral service, he was adapting an earlier song written about Marilyn Monroe. Interesting you have applied this theme to relate to the black slave in place of a beautiful white woman. (No disrespect to either.)

My words… as I was ‘listening’ to Candle In The Wind By Elton John (1997)...unquote
In as much, my poet, the reverence was regarding a man, who has allowed life to strip him of his bare necessities; life, love and the pursuit of true happiness yet, to trap himself in his own sense of doom in disallowing the touch of warmness to unbreak his cycle of self-hurt.
I could never fathom how you can derive to the conclusion this is a slave or the reference in poetic tones to the late Marilyn Monroe or the revised tribute to Princess Diana.
Poetry is about what the poetess/poet sees through their eyes, the spill from their pen and not to be doubted in its creed or further explained when the reason falls short of the assumption.
Thank you for reading and commenting, enjoy your Easter evening as well

It was the ropes that made me think of bound up slaves. Alex Hailey and Roots has a lot to answer for influencing me.
