Fragments
Shaving this morning
Thinking about my Dad
4 years behind enemy lines
WW ll
Came back home to honesty and marriage
He was hard to be close to
Never said much
It was what he didn't say
That said so much
I wear him on my shoulder
Times like this needed more than ever
Wisdom
Pragmatism
Living by a code
He never told us what he saw overseas
Protected us from evil
Shaved every morning the rest of his days
Thinking about my Dad
4 years behind enemy lines
WW ll
Came back home to honesty and marriage
He was hard to be close to
Never said much
It was what he didn't say
That said so much
I wear him on my shoulder
Times like this needed more than ever
Wisdom
Pragmatism
Living by a code
He never told us what he saw overseas
Protected us from evil
Shaved every morning the rest of his days

Funny how what they don't say carries so much weight, isn't it? Love this one. I'm keeping it, please and thank you :-)

My pleasure Willow
Gives me pause when I think of his steadiness and character. Someone to admire forever ....

Dear P,
So very touching an honor to your father. Seems that generation clammed up and got down to business without complaint, entitlement, or expectations. An admirable group. “I wear him on my shoulder” beautiful line. This is a spectacular write! H🌷

Thank you H
We had a complicated relationship but he is my hero for decency and honor.
Both of parents were remarkable hardworking people with sincere values. My mom would love this poem as she was always telling me how much my dad loved me even though he had a hard time expressing it himself. We are different cloth but the admiration never waned. I'm lucky that way !!
Thanks for your comments

Very lovely. I bet there's more of him in you than you realize. That usually makes for a complicated relationship....

My teen years were a mess
We did better after I left home
I wish he were here for solace
I also wish we could have made a pivot towards each other in my teen years but .....

You're welcome.

You deserve a father like that
Your father deserves a son like you.

Every year we tuck beneath our belts is hopefully...
an opportunity to grow just a little bit wiser...with fortune on our side... Well done indeed... Ely

Sometimes all we are left with are the fragments to pull us through.
Lots of love, cowboy.

Your dad's generation was indeed the greatest. Tough as nails but they came back with wounds we'll never see or hear.
I'm thinking your aftershave or just the ritual of shaving brings you back to your time with him.
Truly an outstanding verse.
