Will I Forget You?
I’m sure my grandmother could tell you
better than I can
about what love is
to take care of someone that can no longer can say thank you
to hold onto memories of kisses
that can’t be returned
to trade romantic dinners for feeding tubes
and shower sex for sponge baths
while water floods her cheeks
They never imaged together forever turning into one praying the other die peacefully in their sleep.
In a place where nurses often are mistaken for someone’s daughter
where a child gets a “who are you again?”
How many times would I hear the word Dementia, shortly asking for my mother long after she’s gone?
If had a chance to forget heart break
to tap my cane
back to 2016 in 2066 and repeat the same song that was playing in the background the first time she said,
“I love you” and not recall “I’m leaving!”
with the biggest smile on my face
and a wrinkle on my brow that’ll tell you how long I frowned before I LOST MY DAMN MIND.
