Dipping a Toe
For what I wrote was like dipping a toe
In a pool testing a mood too hot or too cold
Not until the written word is given breath
Not until the written word is given test
Can I know if the words I wrote are real
Can I know if the words I wrote are what I feel
Or is the ink just a fool’s sword and shield
Dull with intention but sharp in its wield
And if words I wrote lie sleeping undisturbed
They’re words with no feeling- not to be heard
In a pool testing a mood too hot or too cold
Not until the written word is given breath
Not until the written word is given test
Can I know if the words I wrote are real
Can I know if the words I wrote are what I feel
Or is the ink just a fool’s sword and shield
Dull with intention but sharp in its wield
And if words I wrote lie sleeping undisturbed
They’re words with no feeling- not to be heard
