Love, loss and those unspoken 80’s moments...
My first love was Atreyu, and the soundtrack that took me to another world.
And then, came David Bowie in the Labyrinth followed by ET; phone home, before Flashdance.
Though, I never quite understood why the boys would stare at me for dressing in shiny lycra with leg warmers, high top converse sneakers and cropped T’s as my breasts started budding whilst we went roller skating every Friday night, for years on end.
I soon learnt how cruel the world was when my childhood friend of 9 years abruptly moved out of my street, without any notice.
He walked me to & from school on a daily basis, and by the time we graduated year 7, and were heading into high school, we started kissing & holding hands.
His parents began acting strange towards me, and he’d apologise for their rude behaviour. His absence screwed me up for a little while as he was my best friend.
He was the only skater boy that I taught how to roller skate but no one else existed in the skating rink on the evenings his parents would let him out, and we’d skate for hours on end listening to music, and crashing into one another.
It’s funny how music can remain embedded within ones heart & soul.
He & I shared the same love for Atreyu and Falkor, and I lost count of the many times we spent watching the never ending story after school before his parents arrived home from work.
Young love, is a beautiful thing.
He was a key chain kid, and well, I was almost an orphan up for adoption at birth but what followed after that doesn’t deserve to be on this page...
