Buried in the sand

I carried you one mile,
Your little body,
Wrapped in a dirty towel,
Lifeless,
Freshly dead,

Just three hours before,
We danced happy,
As the the sun set,
Colorful,
Drums beating,

My faithful little companion,
We adventured free,
Throughout the islands,
Blissful,
Best Friends

Will this emptiness always remain?

Author's Note
This is Booger. Tragedy struck Oct 11, 2019. A speeding car squished him and didn't even stop. He was my best friend. I buried him in his favorite spot to play. He adventured with me and was always happy; full of love. It's still very hard. I'm trying to stitch my heart back together, but some nights my dreams haunt me.
