Image for the poem Light Skin

Light Skin

Half bake and salted
Maple vanilla bean
Chocolate Sprinkles
on a cone
With oreo cookie cream

Hazelnut eyes sometimes
or Black berry gem
It depend
Lift up your head baby girl
Your color ain't no sin

Saw them mocking and staring
as they laughed and taunted
Light Skin! Wigger, Mutt, Zebra
In her head it Haunted!
But As she grew older
all she saw
was a fare skin Queen

Most beautiful soul inside
but yet ever seen
She Wore rubies and gems
all brand New
A castle in the ghetto
As they served liver with Rue

She rode white horses,
And black ones too
Never seeing their color
As for they did what they do

Back to reality
As she opened the schools doors
Wishing she was a snake
So she could slide across the floors

Your color ain't no Sin
Head held high
With a wondering grin.
Your color ain't no sin
She reminded herself
Once again and again.
