Yep. Just a little compromise. Guess that's a little too much to ask out of our species.

People have been groomed for decades where compromising is now experienced as failure. Beaten up by a war of economic attrition, people find comfort in extreme beliefs, whatever they are.

Re: Re. Considering compromise
Very interesting question, Ely. What do I mean by extreme? It doesn't have to be extreme in terms of violence - I know several very earnest peace-dwelling flat-earthers; I would count that as extreme, and have looked at the evidence openly but am not convinced.
But why the appeal of extreme beliefs? Maybe it is a counterbalance to growing uncertainty - eco, financial, political - the greater the felt experience of uncertainty, the greater the 'extremeness' of beliefs that act as a kind of 'psychological bunker' as fear for the future increases.
Thinking on it, I was also alluding to the extremeness (as in tenacity) of hanging on to 'the faith' no matter what the adverse consequences, even for oneself - Brexit springs to mind. So does going to war with Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc

I wish there was more compromise. 💔
I think that if people would listen, instead of talking so much, they would find they want similar things.
It is easy to make rash decisions if you only see the actions of others, it takes patience (and can save lives) to try to dig into the root and ask, wholeheartedly, "but why?".
Maybe we need more anthropologists in politics? ❤
