Hill 223

We must hold the Argonne.
This has gone on far too long.
With the Lost Battalion broken through.
The war is almost done.

For our duty to our homeland.
For our nations dwindling pride.
We must all stand together.
Until we die, we fight.

Here on Hill 223.
I can see our victory.
It drifts away over the graves we fill.
Here on Hill 223.
We go down in history.
As 132 captured on Castle Hill.

The end of the war drawing near.
As our final hope reappears.
The 210th has arrived.
To lead the charge into the fight.

For the men under my command.
For the lives that are in my care.
The fighting has come to an end.
We all gave our surrender there.

Here on Hill 223.
I can see our victory.
It drifts away over the graves we fill.
Here on Hill 223.
We go down in history.
As 132 captured on Castle Hill.

Surrender!
Surrender!
This man is made of stone.

Surrender!
Surrender!
And we’ll all make it home.

Here on Hill 223.
I can see our victory.
It drifts away over the graves we fill.
Here on Hill 223.
We go down in history.
As 132 captured on Castle Hill.

On Castle Hill.

Author's Note
Alvin York captured 132 men at Castle Hill. I wanted to write a song about the event from their side, so I took the perspective of the German commander in charge.
