The Season of Melancholy
Draped with such promise in yellowed & amber hues,
oh so silently, they drift & always to my dismay
On beloved summer's most glorious of landscapes & blooms,
they prey & take hostage; these dreary autumn days
On the cusp, waits the somber cold dressed in wintery blues,
as sunlight seeps into crevices of Earth's crumbling decay
'Til spring sprouts its vengeance & true promise of renewal,
on Earth's resilient floor, I'll lay in wake....

I love the man, but when F Scott coined the phrase "Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall" ...wtf was he thinking?!
I know many love it, but it feels like the season of death. Ugh.

The poem and your comment would resonate with those who suffer SAD when days get short and colder.
I think Scott Fitzgerald was speaking out of his depth, does not sound like one in tune with nature like say Wordsworth and other country based poets who would have more likely seen spring as renewal time. NYC and Hollywood were more FSF's haunts.

Yes, I've been this way since childhood. It makes it awkward at times, given Fall is my hubby's favorite. One highlight is campfires & marshmallows!

There've been a good many 'bonfires and marshmallows' down my way lately at this season of Bonfire Night around 5 November (my village has just had its community fireworks display on Saturday night). Ironic this year - Bonfire Night commemorates the discovery of a plot on 5 November 1605 to blow up the British Parliament; this year 5 November will be the day the present session of Parliament ends before the December general elections. (Cynics might say some of our politicians could do with blowing up!)

This definitely reflects the outside elements at present. A very classic flow to this Pandora. Nicely done.

Yes, unfortunately. The miracle is in growing back. I just don't see where, we as humans, are renewed in the process. Nevertheless, all is evanescent & we can't grow stagnant. Maybe there's a hidden revelation. Lol

I guess a matter of perspective ... From one we are renewed each day ... All depends what you're looking for ... Bless and love ...

Your gift with words shines through the winter cold. Even when writing of the sorrowful land you create transcendent beauty. That last line was just brilliant. My winters were better when my loved ones still walked the earth. Now I can fully relate to your feelings on winter. The melancholy blues have found a home in your words which make the reader feel less alone in this season. For that I am grateful and in awe of your poetry.

You always find the kindest words to bless me with, John. I'm forever grateful, always no that! I'm much like you, the season's were much easier with all those I loved around. The change has always brought about some melancholy long before I knew what that was & just felt the outcast as a kid. Thank you for the honor of the add too!

Thank you kindly, Hunter. Although I'm sorry you can relate. Since I'm older, I warn you that these tides don't seem to change.😅🙄so good to have you back so don't let melancholy days allow you to stray! ;)

Autumn brings decay into clear crisp focus. Every path is littered. Not one single fallen leaf retains the golden hue beneath the cruel tread of the boot.
