Dissociating

~Unbalanced ~
one foot
tethered to certainty,
one firmly planted
in the impossible;
the truth now reflecting,
silvery and bold
in her wary,
star-struck eyes
and it’s far more dazzling
than she ever dared
imagine;
she beats back the urge
to take off in any direction,
in every direction;
fight-or-flight
never had anything
on her

~Untethered~
her shoelaces come
undone
and they dance
wildly
in chaotic arcs
as she runs
headlong
into the bright sun,
cool winds from every direction
rushing
over clammy, wet skin
sensitive follicles
gasping for air
as the exertion of her exodus
glistens on her brow

~Undressed~.
her heavy coat,
discarded;
heaped in a pile
by the side of the road,
it’s itchy, angry fibers
stitched together
in neatly mitered squares,
insulated
by the guilt
of her impulsive chaos
stuffed to bursting seams
with gift-wrapped beliefs;
they enveloped her,
but could never seem
to keep her warm;
she left them
on the ground,
to be worn away
by time and elements
the way all old,
unneeded things
should  be
