The City, The Forest and Other Bird Songs
( after Mary Oliver )
It is everywhere—
the echo
overlapping upon itself
as the sweet, lilting
songs of birds
in the
stiff, stately pines
standing thick,
dark and tall
between, among
the bleached high-rises,
their sterile glass eyes blink
from early shifting light
in the nip of dawn,
suddenly begin to herald
the new day—
and, with the vocal trills
lifting up from the
council of trees,
the span of a
disgruntled owl emerges,
leaving me
quelled of speech,
and only a single thought
of hope
following its flight,
as I wait for permission
to cross
a wide intersection
that is yet to be
inundated with the day’s
humanity.

Thank you JohnnyBlaze. I'm very moved by how my humble ink has touched you as one poet to another.
Re. The City, The Forest and Other Bird Songs
Lyrical use of alliteration to carry your poem through...I'm very taken with the manner in which you walk the reader
through forest and Glen...and then... open their eyes at an intersection in the middle of the city... What a shock...such a nice write... Ely
PS. Good luck with the competition.

Oh my thank you MzEly for your take on the adventure as dew is still wet on the park grass over near the Museum of Modern Art, when businesses are just about to open. I hope the shock, realizing where you suddenly were, quickly turned into an "ah-ha!" moment.

Kathy, I’ve always enjoyed your way with free form verse since you first came upon the Deepend. And now this: your take & style, your rendition & translation of Oliver - I’m taken.
Best of luck in the challenge.

hello? ballpark?
these phrases are sturdy as heck:
stiff, stately pines
standing thick,
*
the bleached high-rises,
their sterile glass eyes blink
from early shifting light
*
from the
council of trees,
the span of a
disgruntled owl emerges,

The slow pace and vivid details have a harmony that is quite natural. I love the close in particular, but the whole is quite winsome.

Thank you Daniel on your continued support, I hope I don't let you down, though it's still me writing in my own way that has me scratch my head. A deer caught in the high beams?

lol speak your heart and it resonates. That is the most important thing to me. Plenty of quite clever writing that is just dry and lifeless.

This has the simple, joyful, observatory language of Mary Oliver. You have captured her childlike awe and wonder at the natural world that is tempered in a wisdom of the modern one..

Hello dear PR. I'm terribly honored to see you stopped by and enjoyed the read - this means a lot. Thank you for your detailing of my approach and ink in honor of Mary Oliver. I so enjoyed putting this together - me having been a city girl all my life. But more in tune with nature as I began the second half of my life's education.
Happy you picked up on it all.
