Open your heart (to do list: after the breakup)

( after Rupi Kaur )

Are you a true friend to a friend, my friend.
Have you a gift you’d take all the way there?
It will travel in the small of your hand
Where he had placed it from the north star’s shine.

In the cold of night, and the heat of day,
For a hundred miles, for five hundred miles,
For a thousand miles, for two thousand miles
To keep its clear promise all the way there?

When you arrive at last what will you say,
When you arrive at last what will you do?
Don’t say too much before they ask you in;
Just introductions then give them the gift.

“You seem very nice.”  So do you, I’m sure.
“You seem like someone who has everything.”
I never had this before. What is it?
“Here. It’s a prehistoric cameo.”

I see. Good Lord, it’s so small and fragile.
“Strong enough from The White Cliffs of Dover.”
Thank you. Like a human heart in my hand.
“This was never mine, it’s yours now.”  Come in.

Author's Note
Inspired by a number of Kaur’s longer works, but when I read “to do list (after the breakup)”, I was ready to go outside the box: https://www.instagram.com/p/BKcHjd8A0cD/

My 2nd entry for the Classic Corner tribute to Rupi Kaur: “the sun and her flowers", cohosted by Ahavati and JohnnyBlaze.
