gran's generation were in their forties
during the war, she'd seen more than
enough of life to cope throughout the
thirties with the depression; her city
would surely survive despite the smoke ..

Family business was blitzed in Liverpool during the war - Gran was always very philosophical about it - which was after the Depression, as you note, and that was after losing family in WW1. Amazingly she lived to be 96, dying in 1984.
