Known To Be Left (Left Behind)
Mirrored in absence
known, felt,
the one shot taken, unremoved.
I unbutton my blouse
to find him whole, a pitcher of cream
soured, undrank,
left behind by my thirstless heart,
tears lifted by Mercy's angel from it,
and him, gone.
I remember his backside the most vividly,
I could not swim far enough to reach
and pull him back to me
through an eyelet of my hopefulness.
I could not repair the dying love for him.
I remain untouched, ashamed of my pitted skin
above where my own heart had been,
all along in faith,
laughing on the outside as
naked with the clothed,
slowly coming undone.
I die inside the
insect-bitten flesh of his leaving,
no longer known best by anyone,
broken free from having been known.

I listened to this and loved it, there's a reading in the transcript I linked to..
This poem tugged at my heartstrings as many of Sharon Olds poems do, I'm so glad I could do it justice, I really tried to capture the grief and self-deprecation that she conveyed..
I just wrote this one, so I still have a couple more to post that I wrote a while back, I'm not sure yet which one I will designate for the entry, ill see how they come out :)
Thanks for the comment and RL honor..

It’s beautiful, dear sister, and represents her, and every hashtag chosen to my heart’s embrace.

I'm so glad you liked it and the hashtags, there were so many that applied to this but I wanted to leave room for that final one..
I've never written about rejection before in this capacity, it was a new feeling, I tried to put myself in her shoes though painful, I'm so glad it made the poem beautiful..
Thanks so much for the comment, sister:)

So true, such a great interpretation, it was inspired by the ending of the original poem, 'what is living anyway, but dying' , she had a way of making the readers feel that way, too
I think (deconstructed via a bypass machine of sorts then reassembled) , I felt that..

"I unbutton my blouse

Visually striking white and red imagery to contrast with the somber tone.

When I wrote this line, I wasn't even sure exactly what I was referring to, but the original poem mentioned a pitcher of milk so I used a similar image, I'm glad the colors come through and are meaningful (this symbol is so relative to Plath in the poem 'Edge', I am starting to see how Olds mirrors her in her own poems)..
Thanks for the helpful comment :)

Each stanza captures such a loss, a melancholy, and the loss is so intrinsically intimate in the artful way you describe how deep into you, your flesh, your heart, the feeling has penetrated. It's images play through my mind, sound the depths in my own heart. Your verbiage is eloquent. Unfamiliar with Olds but I was moved by your write.

Thanks so much, friend, great interpretation as always, you're so insightful..
If you liked this poem, you would definitely like the original poem by Olds, she is so descriptive that it is painful at times, like witnessing or experiencing surgery, she is so reminiscent of Plath and Sexton. (All three authors were Scorpios, and so am I, there's a common thread) I'm so glad you were moved by it, thanks for commenting and the RL honor :)

Re: Re. Known To Be Left (Left Behind)
I am a Scorpio as well, and have made that association with my literary preferences many times. I am happy to learn you are one too, that explains my admiration of you and attraction to your work. There is just something so in depth about Scorpios. We do not fear misstep or pain - on the contrary, we face it seeking out the truth.

That is so cool, I am a late November Scorpio like Sharon Olds, unlike Sylvia Plath who was late October, not sure about Ann Sexton but I'm looking forward to writing about her..
I did notice your Scorpio moon piece but didn't make the connection that it was your sign..
I have studied astrology, it's a fasinating subject, maybe ill write about it sometime.
I love the idea of being fearless, that's empowering, great analogy, thanks for the encouragement:)

I've been studying astrology for almost 40 years ( particularly compatibility ). Depending on your birth date, you're either a Scorpio III ( Charm is your central image ) or Scorpio-Sagittarius cusp ( Revolution is your central image ); I'm guessing the latter in regards to your compassionate nature. I'm a II ( Depth ).
I do hope you indulge in a write, I am sure it would be fascinating.

I knew there were three signs in every sign, didn't know they were numbered, I'm a III ..
I already started writing a Scorpio piece.
Heres a trivia question, I wrote journals to my true love about a man with this sign:
You can think about it, hint: I mentioned numerology in a couple pieces indirectly.
