A Sad Sight
I am not a fan
Of Christmas.
It is a holiday
Designed
For farmers
With nothing
Much to do with
The harvest in
And snow
On the ground.
We were proles
And had to get
To work
Snow or no snow
Unless we were
On strike
Or laid off
Facing a holiday
Of gift giving
With no money.
It is the capitalist’s holiday,
The consumer’s holiday,
With just enough
Religious hypocrisy
And saccharine sentimentality
Thrown in to make one
Want to stay drunk
From Thanksgiving
To tax time.
Still it was a very
Sad sight,
The little dog,
Dead by the side
Of the road
Dressed in
In a red cape
With bells
Around the collar.
Of Christmas.
It is a holiday
Designed
For farmers
With nothing
Much to do with
The harvest in
And snow
On the ground.
We were proles
And had to get
To work
Snow or no snow
Unless we were
On strike
Or laid off
Facing a holiday
Of gift giving
With no money.
It is the capitalist’s holiday,
The consumer’s holiday,
With just enough
Religious hypocrisy
And saccharine sentimentality
Thrown in to make one
Want to stay drunk
From Thanksgiving
To tax time.
Still it was a very
Sad sight,
The little dog,
Dead by the side
Of the road
Dressed in
In a red cape
With bells
Around the collar.
