Wedding Canopy

Rainbows, purest blue sky, June sun
all those we loved witnessed, as one
watched as I reached for your hand
You just bestowed my wedding band
and the glass was broken at your feet
Veil removed, smiling, our eyes meet
faces flushed with pride, summer heat

We were so young, so painfully shy
This was the first touch for you and me
You had to be sure this was to be
permissible for so many people to see

Your indecision stopped the ceremony
Even after our elders said it was fine
it was me who took your hand in mine

My manner assured, your smile content
As back down the aisle we finally went.

Author's Note
Competition Piece: (Pinkie Promise) Our first touch was when we held hands as we left the chuppah (wedding canopy). There are differing customs - some say to hold hands later on, in the privacy of a room with a locked door (yichud). Some say to hold hands in front of the assembled. My husband was the latter, I of the former. The elders (wedding officiants, assembled rabbis) were disputing which custom would be followed. The ceremony was literally at a standstill until I took a deep breath, grabbed his hand, and held it for all to see. You could hear the sigh of relief as we proceeded back up the aisle. It has been almost 14 years, and I am still the bolder and more fearless of the two of us - with his total support.
